Why You Should Understand Your Business Before Hiring a Manager

Thinking about hiring a manager? Before you give away a percentage, make sure you understand your own business first. Here's why.

okay so if you're a creator thinking about hiring a manager, i get it. the backend is a lot and handing it off sounds like freedom. but before you give away a percentage of your income, there's something you need to do first — understand your own business.

here's what happens to a lot of creators — you're overwhelmed, so you hire a manager. the manager takes a percentage, handles some things, and you feel relief. but then you realize you don't actually know what they're doing. you don't know if your revenue is growing because of them or despite them. you don't know what good work even looks like. when you don't understand your own business, you can't tell if you're getting your money's worth. and you can't step in when something's off.

before you outsource, you should know what your content performs best (so you know if the manager's strategy makes sense), who your top fans are (so you know if they're being treated right — a crm helps here), what your revenue trends are (so you know if things are actually improving), and what your daily operations look like (so you know what you're handing off and what it's worth). when you understand these things, you hire from a position of knowledge, not desperation.

and here's the plot twist — once you understand your business and put systems in place, you might realize you don't need a manager at all. a lot of creators hire help because they're disorganized, not because the work is too much. once the system handles the chaos, the workload shrinks. tools like an ai ofm can handle a lot of what a human manager would do — content planning, message drafting, analytics — without taking a percentage. for many creators, that's a better first step than outsourcing.

if you do decide a manager is right for you, do it from a position of strength. know your numbers. know your systems. know what you're handing off and what you expect in return. a good manager is a partner, not a replacement for your own understanding. and never give away a percentage without knowing exactly what you're getting for it.

this week, before you think about hiring anyone, spend an hour understanding your own business. look at your revenue, look at your top fans, look at your content performance. that hour will tell you more about what you need than any manager pitch ever will. you already have everything you need — you just need to understand it first.
